The water that bubbles up from artesian springs into this pool at Zilker Park has drawn people together long before Austin was a city. Today lots of folks who are looking to get a break from Texas summer heat dive in to the water that stays about 68 degrees all year long. An afternoon of people watching here is not a bad idea, but a dip in the morning will give you a true immersion into the soul of Austin. A classmate and I would regularly go to Barton Springs on Friday mornings as the sun was starting to rise. (Entry is free before 8:00 am) There, we would join locals who trekked to the springs in swimsuits and bathrobes. Occasionally, ducks and other water fowl would join us for a few laps among the rock outcrops and Barton Springs salamanders. As the sun glinted off the glass buildings downtown, we were surrounded by an authentic Texas Hill Country experience.
